Gordon Grdina Trio with Matthew Shipp and Mark Helias

Juno-winning Vancouver-based Oud/Guitarist Gordon Grdina is known for his incredible versatility and ability to bring a fresh and edgy vibe to any ensemble he joins or forms. A protégé of jazz great Gary Peacock, his sound is a combination of his interests in mainstream jazz, free-form improvisation and Arabic classical music. This evening is the debut concert of this trio, with Matthew Shipp on piano, and Mark Helias on Bass.

Mark Helias has performed with a wide variety of musicians, including trombonist Ray Anderson, with whom he led the 1980s avant-funk band Slickaphonics, Helias has also performed with members of Ornette Coleman’s band, Don Cherry, Dewey Redman, and Ed Blackwell, and Muhal Richard Abrams.

Pianist Matthew Shipp first became well known in the David S. Ware Quartet. He soon began leading his own dates — most often including Ware bandmate and leading bassist William Parker, as well as recording a number of duets with a variety of musicians, from the legendary Roscoe Mitchell to violinist Mat Maneri.
