Music fans of the Pacific Northwest, get ready for our fifth annual year-end daily local music showcase, 100 Bands in 100 Days, where every day until December 31st, we’re showcasing a new band or artist you have to know about, once again presented by Verity Credit Union.
Make sure you are checking the #100Bands100Days hashtag on Twitter on a daily basis to stay on top of all the bands featured and be sure to follow Verity and NW_Music_Scene there. Some days the featured act could be an established and locally-adored northwest-based musician and other times they could be a band with a small following that just hasn’t had their deserved time in the spotlight yet. Either way, we’re fairly confident you can come away from this daily segment with plenty of new favorites. Today’s featured act is Aquamarine Space Unicorns.
Bio:
Joyanna M & Lily Bell are Aquamarine Space Unicorns, a trip-hop duo from Seattle, WA. They have been making music for almost 3 years, and have produced four LPs with another LP to be released in the early part of 2019. Joyanna lays down heavy beats and layers of light accompanied by Lily’s sweet soulful alto voice. They aren’t afraid to sing for the marginalized and oppressed or sing against the powers that be that enable injustice.
Although today’s featured act isn’t one that you’ll be able to catch live any time soon, the prolific duo works extremely hard in the studio to keep their edge. As mentioned above in the snippet of their bio, ASU doesn’t shy away from some of the biggest issues facing society today and who can’t get behind artists with a song titled “Covfefe?” They stand up tall against the long-standing patriarchal societal structure on their release She Persisted (The Brink) from January of this year, and while the words are strong, the message is driven even further home with soaring, EDM infused, space-pop rhythms.
