On December 12th, at Secret Society, La Rivera will celebrate the release of Seer, the latest record from Portland, Oregon-based singer-songwriter Joshua Rivera.

Also on the bill are Ancient Heat and Beach Fire.  Tickets are $10.00 advance/at the door.  Doors are at 8:30pm and the show starts at 9pm.  The show is 21+.

Playing under the moniker La Rivera, Joshua Rivera delivers his seventh album with Seer, created with his band, consisting of  drummer Samuel Dyer, bassist Bill Athens (Trio Subtonic), guitarist Teddy Presberg (Pigwar, DoveDriver), keyboardist Timmy Jones (Tapwater), and the backing vocals of Jessa Campbell (Life During Wartime).

“This album is the first where I’ve made sure every word and every musical passage speaks to the ears of the heart and echoes through the noble demands of the body whole,” says Joshua of Seer.

Recording the basics at Cloud City Studios with engineer Justin Phelps (Neville Brothers, Jolie Holland, Fruition, March Fourth), Rivera then spent countless additional hours at his home studio, with the help of Northwest notables such as Lizzy Ellison (Radiation City), Morrea Masa (Ural Thomas), and Mary-Sue Tobin (Quadrophones), fleshing out the songs.

But, in his quest to make for perfection, Seer didn’t come easy.  Rivera would scrap parts – and even whole songs – and work on them over and over again, changing the vibe of a song until it felt like the song was saying what it needed to say.

Once finished, Rivera brought the record back to Phelps, who mixed the record at Hallowed Halls, also adding real drum chambers, reverb plates, and assorted tools of dimension to the songs, to create an authentically thick vibe.

Mastered by J.J. Golden (Sharon Jones, Calexico, Vetiver, Neko Case, Chris Robinson) in Ventura, California, Rivera received the record back and it was everything he had hoped it would be; beautifully concise and seductive, a record that stands to be a true conduit of a sound that Rivera had been pursuing all along.

Featuring tracks “Daya” and “Claws,” the album’s first and second singles, being serviced to radio soon, Seer showcases a songwriter at his peak, delivering a sonically challenging, yet melodically pleasing record that as good as it sounds on record, will come alive December 12th at Secret Society Ballroom.
