John Craigie, the nomadic singer-songwriter who has spent the past decade continuously touring the U.S. to the delight of his fans, has announced the release of his newest album “Working On My Farewell.”
“Working On My Farewell” is Craigie’s ninth studio album and features ten new songs.
Recorded in small studios in Santa Cruz, CA and Portland, OR, each song features Craigie playing electric guitar – a departure from his primarily acoustic style. In another shift from tradition, Craigie will tour with a backing band. The trio will include Kat Fountain on bass guitar, Moorea Masa on percussion, and Craigie on electric guitar.
The album’s title refers to a Greg Brown song and is in the style of Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” and Beck’s “Sea Change.” Featuring a sweet and dreamy sound, all of the songs are variations on the theme of farewell – whether because of death, break up, moving on, or saying goodbye. Despite the title, this is not Craigie’s farewell tour.
Asked about his shift to electric guitar for this album Craigie explained, “there was a lightness and openess to these songs that sounded purest on the electric.”
Hailed as a “modern-day troubadour” in the style of Woody Guthrie and Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Craigie has played every state in the U.S. and has toured Canada, Europe and South America. Craigie is best known for his storytelling at his live shows, which stays true to the folk singer tradition.
Craigie’s collaborators on the album include Niko Daoussis (lead guitar), currently touring with the Shook Twins; Justin Landis (bass), of the Marshall McLean Band, and Randy Schwartz (drums), formerly the drummer for Brett Dennen. Contributing to the unique sound of the album is the beautiful mixing job done by Jamie Mefford, best known for his mixing and engineering work with Gregory Alan Isakov.
“Working On My Farewell” was produced by Craigie.
