Concert Review: YES plays at Tulalip Amphitheatre

Progressive Rockers YES thrilled the fans at their August 21, performance at the Tulalip Amphitheatre in Marysville, Washington.
YES, formed in 1968, was one of the first bands to be identified in the new genre of “Progressive Rock”. Many bands came from this period of English rockers including such legendary bands like Pink Floyd, King Crimson, Jethro Tull and later, Emerson Lake and Palmer.
This incarnation of YES features Steve Howe on guitar, Chris Squire on bass guitar, Alan White, on drums, Geoff Downes on keyboards and vocalist/guitarist Jon Davison.
The 2014 YES World Tour features the playing of two of the bands classic albums, “Close To The Edge” and “Fragile” in their entirety. Both these albums were ground breaking, as the genre of progressive rock was being given heavy airplay on FM rock radio in the early 1970’s.
Both these classic albums came out in 1972 with “Fragile” becoming an instant classic with the songs “Roundabout”, “Long Distance Runaround” and “Heart Of The Sunrise”. Their follow up album “Close To The Edge” was an opus of an album, which cemented their position as “Progressive Rock” stalwarts.
Jon Davison, lead vocalist, performed these songs as if they were his own. His vocals are very close to original lyricist and singer Jon Anderson, and carried the entire show. Known as one of the greatest guitar players in the world, Steve Howe thrilled the fans with us amazing playing. Chris Squire on his Rickenbacker bass guitar carried the low end, especially on his solo on “Long Distance Runaround”. Geoff Downes (who also plays in ASIA) was melodic throughout his performance on his nine different keyboards. Lastly, there’s Alan White on drums whose an absolute powerhouse behind his amazing drum kit.
In between the performance of the two classic albums, YES played some new music from their current album “Heaven and Earth”. These compositions were very well received and fit in nicely into the set. The concert at the Tulalip Amphitheatre was one of their last shows on the current leg of their North American tour. After a bit of a break, YES will resume their world tour in Australia, New Zealand And Japan.
