Review: Infected Mushroom Energize Showbox Market Crowd

Infected Mushroom 1

The beloved electronic duo that just passed their twenty year mark known as Infected Mushroom returned to the Showbox Market for a sold out show on January 28 and there is no doubt that these guys deserve all the recognition they have received through the years.  They have been pioneers in the electronic music world captivating crowds all over the world and being one of the best-selling Israeli groups in history.

Their 11th studio album, Return of the Sauce, was just released and with that the band has embarked on a worldwide tour.  Their stage setup this time was a little more simple with four large mushrooms on stage, which also served as light fixtures.  The higher stage hosted the drummer and Erez Eisen’s setup and the main level was for the guitarist and singer Amit Duvdevani.

The very energetic Duvdevani moved around the stage, constantly triggering the fans to participate as he instructed them.  They jumped when he motioned, they waved their arms left to right, and they pumped their fists when directed.  The floor at the Market did not stop vibrating all night and everyone was completely enthusiastic.

Duvdevani often grabbed a drum stick and hit the hi-hat, but also used the stick as a conductor’s tool, compelling the crowd to engage. During the encore he got so into it he even used his head on the hi-hat and actually followed the beat.  Got into it is probably an understatement for his performance that lasted for more than two hours.

The group played old hits as well as their latest singles, “Liquid Smoke” and “Nutmeg,” which follow the psytrance style music they’ve been creating since the beginning.  The first encore had the drummer return to the stage alone, having a little drum solo moment before Eisen took his spot next to him creating the added melodies.  Fans screamed so loud they even came back for a second encore.

Eisen stopped by a few fans on his way out and took a candy necklace of a mushroom that they had made themselves.  Duvdevani did this a couple of times from the front row but his didn’t stay around his neck for long, as he started to jump around they flew off.  They are always so good to see live because they have mastered the combination of the live aspect so well as well as the performance piece.  They don’t settle for anything but an electrifying show and that is what you get out of them every time.

Sophia Barkalakis

Music is probably the most important part of her life. Sophia is constantly searching for new material, old and new. Always looking forward to the next live show she can attend, ready to immerse herself in the sound. "There is something so magical about attending a live show that you cannot possibly feel from a recording itself that makes it worth going to", she says. She also says she's lucky to be able to combine her passion for music with her obsession of capturing moments. She finds that being able to look at a photograph and be transported to that second of your life is indescribable and she's so grateful for all those great moments.
