Review: Evan Egerer – ‘Sinner’
Fans of the new breed of acoustic driven singer/songwriters acts like, The Civil Wars, Need to Breath and Kaleo should add northwest artist Evan Egerer to their radar scope. Since winning the national music tournament for Creation Fest NW in 2016 Egerer has been hard at work honing his sound and in typical indie music fashion recording and releasing his own EP’s. His second release Sinner, is a fine five song collection of passionate spiritual meditations and celebrations of the soul. The open clean recording revolves around the sound of his big 1967 Martin D 45 guitar Egerer inherited from his father. Employing loop pedal technique, he creates a one-man band ensemble of riffs and leads and percussion all played on the same instrument to accompany his youthful vocals.
Opening track “Jericho” builds on a gritty guitar line and pounding rhythms under the call to join the joyous tent revival down in an imagined Utopian locale. The mood stays festive with a touch of Irish jig layered into the provocative ode to the power of temptation “Let Your Guard Down,” with Egerer playing the role of the devil himself. The title track begins with another multi layering effect of gospel chorus vocals all sung by Egerer on a simple lyric that builds to a fever pitch.
The mood then downshifts for the pensive and articulate examination of faith “Valleys,” set over a shifting landscape of arpeggios and full strummed chords. Powerful vocalist Laura Esquivel joins Egerer for the theatrical duet “You Won’t Relent.” A song of fierce love between men and their maker, that pleads for the holy spirit to fill their hearts with the great fire.
