Review: Dead End Friend – Mother Nurture EP
Dead End Friend is a rock/alt./blues band. Hailing from Seattle, Jonah Cohen (vocals/guitar) and James Squires (drums/backing vocals) have a familiar sound for some of us. Giving time to the guitar and letting it play for a while, which is becoming harder and harder to find these days. Making a rock song sound like the rock music of the ‘good ole days’ (the 80s).
They aren’t just a couple of guys playing together. They are like a machine. Every part has its own job to do and they do this all very nicely.
The title song: ‘Mother Nurture’ Starts with a couple of guitar mutes, then an abrupt silence. Then again.
This breaks the mind flow of anticipation for the listener, thus bringing a deeper, more soulful connection. The drum joins in @ :09, then the singer @ :25, joining all of them together in harmony. Then….just when you think the song is over, the guitar and drums wake back up and rock on until the end of the song.
As for ‘Piece of Pie’…. Innuendo, innuendo, innuendo. There are a lot of guitar variations. You may not hear them, though, since you’ll be busy listening closely to the words. It doesn’t take long for you to realize that this song has absolutely nothing to do with pie!
‘Medicate Me’ has a bass chugging along, to start with…then before you know it, you’re rockin’ out. This song is so fun! I wanted to start singing along right away. It snakes its way along to a heavy, steady beat. I dare you to listen to this song and NOT bop your head along, not possible!
The final song on this EP is ‘Me and You’. A simple, sweet guitar sound. Soft and pretty….until :57 and before you know it, it has turned into a full rock experience.
Dead End Friend is set to release their debut EP Feb. 14th @
