Review: Colleen Green at Chop Suey (April 12th, 2016)

I’ve been wanting to check out Colleen Green since I first heard about her, and lucky for me and many other fans in the region, she was finally back in Seattle, opening for Basement at Chop Suey. I was expecting the venue to be a little less packed, but it seemed that everyone had the same idea as me, which was kind of surprising seeing as I showed up at 7:00P.M. I heard that this was going on in every stop they were playing, as Green has a following, so people are filling up the place from the start.

She took the stage alone, wearing a vintage Boston Celtics sweater and black sunglasses. I’ve never seen someone plug into their iPad for playback sound, while also playing the electric guitar while singing along to it. It was pretty cool to experience this, as she stood alone and yet kept all eyes on her. She has this charisma to pull you into her voice and sound, and I could definitely see what the buzz has been about.

She released her third album, I Want to Grow Up, last year, which was the first she recorded professionally in a studio. Some of my favorite tracks she performed live were “TV,” “Wild One,” “Deeper Than Love,” “Grind My Teeth,” and the older cut “Only One.” I also think it’s rad that she hand-paints her T-shirts and thinks of many cool ideas to be unique, once including shredded money in an old 7″ titled 4 Loko 2 Kayla. Green is a super cool musician and person, who should definitely be checked out next time she comes to town.

Sophia Barkalakis

Music is probably the most important part of her life. Sophia is constantly searching for new material, old and new. Always looking forward to the next live show she can attend, ready to immerse herself in the sound. "There is something so magical about attending a live show that you cannot possibly feel from a recording itself that makes it worth going to", she says. She also says she's lucky to be able to combine her passion for music with her obsession of capturing moments. She finds that being able to look at a photograph and be transported to that second of your life is indescribable and she's so grateful for all those great moments.
