mtlk_ths2014_2The Mountlake Terrace High School Jazz Ensembles are recognized throughout the Pacific Northwest and they are hailed as “one of the top five high school jazz bands” by Starbucks, at their annual Hot Java Cool Jazz Concert held at the Paramount Theater, which was a sold out event this year on April 25th, 2014.

MTHS Jazz Ensemble 1 is a six time Finalist in the Essentially Ellington Competition held in New York. They have also participated in the Bellevue Community College Jazz Festival, the Newport Jazz Festival where they placed first in the competition and at the Savannah Spring Central Jazz Festival where there placed 3rd out of 12 top bands that were chosen from auditions, to compete at the event. Students in both Jazz 1 and Jazz 2 have taken top honors at regional and national competitions over the years, and have been featured in All-State and All-Northwest music groups, as well as National Ensembles like the Grammy Bands.

MTHS continues to serve their community by playing throughout the year with performances at local events, businesses, private parties and benefits. They are recognized as the go to performing groups for area functions.

Directing the ensembles is Mr. Darin Faul, who has been teaching and directing these fabulous bands for the past 16 years.

Shawn Skager

Shawn Skager is just an everyday joe like you, who loves music and is lucky enough to be able to write about it. When he's not enjoying long walks on the beach, getting caught in the rain, pina coladas and cheesy 70s music by guys named Rupert, Shawn can usually be found in the Northwest Convergence Zone radio studio doing either the Northwest Music Scene radio show or the Hooligan Honky Tonk Radio Hour. And just for the record, Shawn believes that Rush's exclusion from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Hank Williams Sr.'s exclusion from the Grand Ol' Opry are crimes against humanity.
