Concert Review: Little Big Show #16 at The Neptune

We’re always happy to cover the Little Big Show events because they have a great lineup of artists that help support amazing organizations. On this night, KEXP, Starbucks and STG would join forces to benefit Youth in Focus, a group that has been around for 21 years, that empowers youth through photography.

The event kicked off with rising local acts NAVVI and Aquilo setting the stage for the 16th Little Big Show. After their sets ended, the area was changed quickly for the main act to start and around 10-ish the British singer lit up Neptune Theater.

Lapsley smiled as she confidently walked towards the middle of the stage, beginning the night with “Cliff” and “Falling Short.” Her setup included an illuminated background that served as lighting and changed with every song, creating a different lighting design. Along with her three person band she alternated between two mics, which one was used for the deeper electronic voice effect that you hear in her songs.

Holly Lapsley Fletcher, who goes by her middle name artistically, released her debut record Long Way Home back in March via XL records. The singer/songwriter also gained attention after her solo bedroom-recorder Monday EP garnered over half a million plays on Soundcloud. Her powerful voice along with the ambient, R&B beats create a unique space, and as a listener you just bury yourself deep in her sound, never wanting to leave.

Aside from her songs she took a moment and dedicated Kate Bush’s “Woman’s Work” to a friend that had passed away. Her main set ended with “Station” which is one of the first songs she wrote. She also added how much she enjoyed being here and that this was for a great cause. “I was very lucky to get support with all the creative paths I chose when I was growing up and I think it’s very important to give support back.”

After coming back out for the encore she jokingly looked at the audience and said, “I lied, that was not my last song, I’ve got more.” She played “Operator” and started a little dance party, as this was one of her more upbeat pop tunes. The night ended with popular “Hurt Me” that brought the tone back down but we all got to sing along with her. This was a great event to support a great organization and we’re so happy sponsors put this together.

Sophia Barkalakis

Music is probably the most important part of her life. Sophia is constantly searching for new material, old and new. Always looking forward to the next live show she can attend, ready to immerse herself in the sound. "There is something so magical about attending a live show that you cannot possibly feel from a recording itself that makes it worth going to", she says. She also says she's lucky to be able to combine her passion for music with her obsession of capturing moments. She finds that being able to look at a photograph and be transported to that second of your life is indescribable and she's so grateful for all those great moments.
