Concert Review: JoJo Excites and Delights Showbox Crowd

JoJo 1

The overcrowded Showbox Market was packed with excited JoJo fans who couldn’t wait for her to take the stage. Stanaj kicked off the show and quickly won over the patrons with his soft, soulful voice. The singer just released a new EP titled, From A Distance, and he was a great opener for the show.

The stage was mostly cleared in the front while sets got switched allowing JoJo plenty of space to dance around while her band and two backup singers stood behind her. The young pop star took the floor and the screaming fans were ready for a good time. The set started with “Clovers,” as JoJo moved around the stage in her high heels making eye contact with the audience. She was in great spirits throughout the night smiling and engaging with her fans, even telling security to just let them be when they wandered into the pit in the beginning.

Mad Love is her first full length record on a major label after a decade and even though she still released music and toured, fans consider this year her comeback. The space filled with nothing but love for her and you could notice the mutual feeling from a distance. Her set included a good mix of older favorites and songs from the new record. About halfway in the show she pulled up a chair and sat down accompanied by her guitarist and played “Music” and “Baby It’s You,” creating a more intimate section.

She took it back up when she pulled a girl from the audience on stage and sat her on a chair, giving her a little bit of a lap dance during “High Heels.” The blindfolded girl didn’t object to any of it though, and seemed to enjoy all the attention she received. The fact that JoJo does this bit with both men and women is really cool. The room filled up with her positive attitude and inclusive remarks, creating a safe space for fans to express themselves.
Before jumping into “FAB,” she noted that in the new year she has zero tolerance for fake-ass * B**ches and we shouldn’t either. She continued with “F*** Apologies,” and ended her set with “Mad Love,” which included excerpts of Mariah Carey’s “Vision Of Love,” that mixed great together.

Sophia Barkalakis

Music is probably the most important part of her life. Sophia is constantly searching for new material, old and new. Always looking forward to the next live show she can attend, ready to immerse herself in the sound. "There is something so magical about attending a live show that you cannot possibly feel from a recording itself that makes it worth going to", she says. She also says she's lucky to be able to combine her passion for music with her obsession of capturing moments. She finds that being able to look at a photograph and be transported to that second of your life is indescribable and she's so grateful for all those great moments.
