Concert Review: Al Di Meola with Elegant Gypsy

Venue: Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley

Date: April 30, 2015

Al Di Meola is one of those musicians that have built a career that is expressive and expansive. With his performance at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley in Downtown Seattle, Di Meola brought in his stellar band Elegant Gypsy and thoroughly blew everyone’s mind with their outstanding musicianship.

Al Di Meola is most noted for his classic album ‘Friday Night in San Francisco’ with John McLaughlin and Paco De Lucia from 1981. On that album, the classic flamenco styling carried the day. But in his 1976 debut album ‘Land of the Midnight Sun’, Di Meola displayed the electric guitar jazz playing that has established him as one the great virtuosos in Jazz.

On this Seattle evening, Al Di Meola performed with his outstanding band of Philippe Saisse on keyboards, Gumbi Ortiz on percussion, Joel Taylor on drums and Arman Sabal Lecco on bass guitar. These guys were tight and funky. The electric jazz fusion that filled Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley was truly a treat and unbelievable experience.

Al Di Meola is considered one of the greats in the contemporary jazz guitar world and in this performance he did not disappoint. Di Meola is one of those musicians that truly has become an international musician that transcend time and space with his playing. After this weekend’s residency at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, Di Meola heads off to Europe to perform The Beatles & More Acoustic, which should be wonderful.

Al Di Meola will be performing through the weekend at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley, don’t miss him; these guys will blow you away. Get tickets HERE
