The Pacific Jazz Institute at Dimitriou’s Jazz Alley welcomes bassist extraordinaire Chris Minh Dokey with his band the Nomads (Dean Brown – guitar and George Whitty – keyboards) featuring special guest drummer Dave Weckl for two nights. Clearly the work of Chris Minh Doky, Scenes From A Dream moves in a fresh direction and is another testament to the versatility Doky has previously demonstrated on albums such as the jazz-funk Listen Up, The Nomad Diaries with its electronica-jazz fusion and the vivid expression of Cinematique. As it is with the previous 10 solo albums, the latest set marks a new chapter in an ongoing volume of masterful bass playing–that’s the bottom line.

His bass earned him a reputation as an excellent sideman and one of the most innovative soloists to hit the Big Apple in years. The big break came when Mike Stern invited Doky to join his band in 1991. The word spread from New York to the greater world of jazz and soon Doky found himself playing with great musicians he’d listened to in the early years: Michael Brecker, David Sanborn, Ryuichi Sakamoto, Mike Stern, Michele Camilo, Trilok Gurtu, Bireli Lagrene, John Scofield, Kenny Garret and more.

For more than 25 years, Dave Weckl has developed and maintained a reputation among fans, peers, and the international music community as on of the great living drummers. For this, he’s received numerous accolades and honors; Modern Drummer magazine inducted Dave in their Hall of Fame and named him “one of the 25 best drummers of all time.” These honors are the product of Dave’s undying commitment to making great compositions. His incredibly dynamic and diverse drumming, which has inspired musicians worldwide, is built on a solid foundation of knowledge and respect for music. He’s played with a list of who’s who including Chick Corea, Mike Stern, Simon and Garfunkel, George Benson, Diana Ross, Robert Plant, Peabo Bryson and more.
