Review: Wye Oak Returns to Seattle for Neumos Performance
I didn’t know much about Tuskha other than that it was Phil Moore’s solo project, best known as the frontman of Bowerbirds. Justin Vernon has said that there would be no Bon Iver without the inspiration from Moore years ago, which is a great compliment. I was excited to check them out when they opened for Wye Oak at Neumos and see where the music takes me.
Phil took the stage with his brother on keys a little after 9:00, and from the start, the tone was set to high-energy. He danced around, getting into the music, and the crowd was following along with him. His self-titled album was released this year and “The Program,” “First Date,” “The Shine,” and “The While” are some of my favorites on the LP. This is someone you should see live next time they play near you.
A little after 10:00, it was time for Wye Oak to take the stage. It was funny to see both bands tonight consist of two people each. Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack released their latest record Tween this year, and are currently touring. Jenn played the guitar most of the night but also switched to the keys and bass, while Andy pounded on his drumset.
Jenn stopped to thank the crowd for their support and mention that they have probably been to Seattle the most this past year. The two had good chemistry as they played new and old songs from their catalog. Some of my most liked songs are “Out of Nowhere,” “Watching the Waiting,” “Civilian,” and “Glory.” Check them out. Also, Wasner is going to be back with her solo project as Flock of Dimes on October 22nd, so watch out for that show too.
