Sub Pop partners with Drip FM for subscription service

Anybody remember the Sub Pop Singles Club? Back in the day, when that Pacific Northwest phenomena called grunge was beginning to claw it’s way out of the primordial Puget Sound ooze, a couple of savvy entrepreneurs started a label called Sub Pop. Realizing the key to growing an independent record label was regionalizing the music and focusing on a scene (heard of Motown?), these two demi-deities, Jonathan Poneman and Bruce Pavitt, launched their label, providing a monthly taste of their wares via the Sub Pop Singles Club. The club kicked off in November of 1988 with a 7″ single called “Love Buzz” by a little known Aberdeen band called  Nirvana. Club membership soon became a must-have for underground music addicts looking for their next fixation.

lovebuzz Among the bands featured on the singles were such heavyweight genre-definers as Sonic Youth, Flaming Lips, The Afghan Whigs, TAd, Fugazi, L7, Dwarves, Babes in Toyland, Rollings Band, Soundgarden, The Reverend Horton Heat, Poison Idea, Urge Overkill, Shonen Knife, Love Battery, Antiseen and oh so much, much more.

On June 17, in a move that hearkens back to the singles club concept, Sub Pop announced a subscription service with Drip FM.

Shawn Skager is just an everyday joe like you, who loves music and is lucky enough to be able to write about it. When he's not enjoying long walks on the beach, getting caught in the rain, pina coladas and cheesy 70s music by guys named Rupert, Shawn can usually be found in the Northwest Convergence Zone radio studio doing either the Northwest Music Scene radio show or the Hooligan Honky Tonk Radio Hour. And just for the record, Shawn believes that Rush's exclusion from the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Hank Williams Sr.'s exclusion from the Grand Ol' Opry are crimes against humanity.
