Review: Kris Orlowski’s Album Release at The Crocodile

Seattleite Kris Orlowski and his band just released their sophomore full-length album Often in the Pause, and I and many other lucky local music fans were at the Crocodile for the album release night. We’ve all seen the video for “Carry Your Weight” and gotten a taste of the new material with “Walking in My Sleep” and “Falling Apart,” but hearing a good majority of the new material live was different.

The night opened with The Hollers and Silver Torches, both of whom played great sets before Kris took the stage a little after 10. The hometown show was off to a great start with people singing along and yelling things like, “I love your mustache!” His set included new tunes that continued on the same indie folk style Orlowski has been running with throughout his career, as well as favorites from his 2014 debut Believer.

Kris stopped a few times to chat with the audience and to thank them for being there to celebrate the album release, as well as supporting the band through the years. Towards the end, a couple of people brought out a cake with candles for keyboardist Torry Anderson, as it was his birthday. The band shares a great chemistry on stage that shines through on their recorded material as well.

One of my favorite moments was hearing “Carolina” and watching the whole room fill the space with their voices. Other highlights were the “Fighting the War” and “Mountains” performances. Orlowski mentioned that it was drummer Greg Garcia’s last night playing with the band, as he’s going on his own path. I can’t wait to see how the rest of the year progresses for them, as the new record is great and deserves all the support it can get. At least we know Seattle is already on board with it, judging from the night.

Sophia Barkalakis

Music is probably the most important part of her life. Sophia is constantly searching for new material, old and new. Always looking forward to the next live show she can attend, ready to immerse herself in the sound. "There is something so magical about attending a live show that you cannot possibly feel from a recording itself that makes it worth going to", she says. She also says she's lucky to be able to combine her passion for music with her obsession of capturing moments. She finds that being able to look at a photograph and be transported to that second of your life is indescribable and she's so grateful for all those great moments.
