In yet another sign that time flies, Tuesday, November 15th will mark exactly three decades since hip-hop icons Adrock, MCA, and Mike D sprung on the scene in 1986 with the release of their debut album Licensed to Ill. While the Beastie Boys retired following Adam Yauch’s untimely death in 2011, the three MC’s signature sound will come back to life with a cover-to-cover performance of the album by Seattle’s own Brass Monkeys at the High Dive in Fremont at 9pm. The sample heavy songs will be rapped over the Beastie’s original backing tracks whereas the more rock oriented tunes will feature a live backing band with guitar, drums, and bass. Additionally, a second set will feature hits and deep cuts from the rest of the Beastie Boys’ catalogue.

For those of you unfamiliar with the album itself, you are certain to recognize favorites like “No Sleep Till Brooklyn”, “Brass Monkey”, “Time to Get Ill”, “Girls”, and “Fight for Your Right”. While the Beastie Boys later distanced themselves from the tongue-in-cheek political incorrectness of Licensed to Ill, there is no denying that these songs propelled the group to lasting international fame and that die hard fans cherish the album to this day. This performance is sure to induce nostalgia in those who grew up with the Beastie Boys while giving those who didn’t a chance to step into a musical time machine.

“There is no shortage of folks who would canonize Licensed to Ill… it’s the Beastie Boys’ worst record. (Even though we all secretly know it’s their best.)… All these years later, with every listen, it becomes clearer to me that you can never really outrun your inner idiot.” – Dominique Leone, Pitchfork

Brass Monkeys – Beastie Boys Tribute is a rotating collaboration of musicians, management, and crew from Seattle bands including Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme, Ayron Jones, Grace Love (SDR&S musical), and Down North. The common thread amongst these talented professionals is a desire to faithfully recreate the Beastie Boys’ feel and sound while instigating the “illest” parties Seattle has to offer.
