Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears coming to Seattle, Portland, & British Columbia in September

Texas blues-rock outfit Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears are excited to announce the premiere of their official music video for “Culture Vulture” on Afropunk. “Culture Vulture” is the first single from from the band’s upcoming studio LP, The Difference Between Me & You – an album that tackles the rare feat of creating an electrified and informed “real blues” record. Although the 13-track album will be officially released to the public on September 7th, 2018, fans can currently reserve it now through the band’s pre-sale on iTunes,Amazon, and the Black Joe Lewis official merch store. In celebration of the upcoming release, the band is embarking on an extensive tour throughout the US and Canada this fall. A list of northwest tour dates are below.

Recorded in their hometown of Austin, Texas, with Grammy award winning producer Stuart Sikes (The White Stripes, Cat Power, Modest Mouse) at the helm, Black Joe Lewis & The Honeybears’ fifth studio album delivers more of the familiar southern soul, gritty blues, and vintage rock n’ roll sound that Lewis has perfected throughout his career. However, The Difference Between Me & You charts into new territory with a heavy stream of lyrical consciousness reflective of the current pop-culture and political mood.

“Culture Vulture is a song about those who consume everything from the masses to create their identity while thinking it’s their own culture and influence that is under attack from others they perceive as different,” Joe Lewis tellsAfropunk. “They think some kind of urban revolution is needed to preserve what’s theirs, which allows the Powers that be to play off their fear mongering and watch the world burn.”

“Online you stay all night/ What they want they already have/ Tiki torches & haircuts blaming somebody you never meet/ That’s porno for the agency,” he sings on the gritty, vintage-flared track. With The Difference Between Me & You, “I wanted to make a more complex and reflective record than I ever have before,” Lewis explains.

The band’s new album works to explore the human psyche through an impassioned and introspective lens while exploring a deep repertoire of sounds: the heavy grooves of Albert King, punked-up blues of R.L. Burnside, the storytelling of Bobby “Blue” Bland, and the soulfully layered horns of The Rolling Stones. “Culture Vulture” isn’t the only track that expands on the vices and followers within society, similar themes of derision can also be found on “Rhyme of Reason”. And on the boisterous opening track “Nothing but a Cliché”, Lewis exposes an old acquaintance whose interests were best suited only for themselves.

Mining through Lewis’ first decade of experience on the road, The Difference Between Me & You, traverses a lifetime of physical and metaphysical experiences and is characterized by looking in the mirror – and asking yourself the tough questions.
