Music fans of the Pacific Northwest, hello and welcome back to our third annual year-end daily countdown, 100 Bands in 100 Days, where every day until December 31st, we’re showcasing a new band or artist you have to know about, presented by Verity Credit Union. Follow the #100Bands100Days hashtag on Twitter to stay on top of all the bands featured and make sure to follow Verity on Twitter as well. Some days the featured act could be an established and locally-adored northwest-based musician that perhaps you haven’t been turned onto yet, and other times they could be a band with a small following that just hasn’t had their deserved time in the sun yet. Either way, we’re fairly confident you can come away from this daily segment with plenty of new favorites. Today’s offering is a local outfit that leads very little introduction and the band is  Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme.

Many bands have good stories about how they were formed but not many can match the story of Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme. A decade ago in what was supposed to be a one-off event, an instrumental band teamed up with a guest singer to learn some James Brown and Parliament covers for a moving-out party. The next morning, the house was torn up; shattered glass all over the floor, tables were broken, and the landlord was on his way for the final walk-through. In the wake of this carnage, this band came to life.

Over the past few years this funk juggernaut has headlined practically every prestigious joint in Seattle and Portland, including The Crocodile, Neumos, Tractor Tavern, Showbox, Doug Fir Lounge, and Star Theater. They have also ruthlessly funked thousands of festival attendees at Bumbershoot, the Waterfront Blues Festival in Portland, and July 4th at Gasworks Park. Their high energy, tight arrangements, and massive stage presence have the power to convince any crowd that funk ain’t dead.

The band’s 2013 release Gravy’s In Your Area was and is a filthy throwback to the golden days of the delicious grooves delivered by great funk music. This ferociously funky band with double digit members are a special kind of outfit and a must listen and/or see live at the very first opportunity.

You can check out Eldridge Gravy & the Court Supreme on Facebook or their website and you can also stream their latest album below via Soundcloud.
